ADVICE ON PUBLIC PATHS  - AN A TO Z OF PROBLEMS AND PROTOCOLS
This excellent little booklet is produced by the Public Rights of Way Unit, Cheshire County Council. Its contents have guidance on subjects such as Barbed wire, Bulls and dangerous animals, Crops on Public Rights of Way, the Definitive map, Dogs on PROW’s, Electric fences,
We have a local footpath map which includes the adjacent parishes of Alvanley and Manley.  It was sponsored by BICC Cables and first published in October 1997 by the Public Rights of Way Unit of Cheshire County Council with cooperation from ourselves and that of Alvanley and Manley Parish Councils. All the footpaths are shown together with their number and route. Several suggested walks are included.  Copies may be had from Helsby Post Office and Frodsham Post Office price £1.00. They are also available by post from the Society, price £1.50 including p&p. (see Contact us).

HELSBY FOOTPATHS

Footpaths in parishes are numbered and in the case of Helsby these are listed from 2 to 28. Where a path continues into another parish it becomes the number, usually a different one, allocated to it in that parish. For those who may be curious, the “missing” Footpath 1 is shown on a draft footpath map from postwar days  (about 1947) as being from the A56 opposite Helsby Parish cemetery down Bluebridge Lane, over the railway bridge and then a right turn onto the marshes. There was an objection to it (possibly from Cheshire Lines) and it never reached definitive status.
